SPECTACLES FOR THE BLIND

The Spectacles for the blind consists of a camera connected to a pair of sunglasses with a built-in distance measuring device in one lens and a pinhole camera in the other. It is a "wearable" computer attached to the glasses worn on the user's belt that receives and processes information from the devices in the glasses. A second computer that sends signals to electrodes directly on the brain's surface. Wiring connections from the computer to the surface of the brain. It is a cool device which will help blind people to see but not the exact picture but they will be able to see likea picture in the negative. You will understand how it look like from the picture. It has not been launched yet but it is on test bases right now in an institute called Dobelle Institute. The researchers hope to have an improved version of the device for commercial use later in the year.

THE BUG RADIO

With the recent onslaught of somewhat tired, retro radios it is about time someone injected a bit of imagination into the digital market, and designer, Wayne Hemmingway would seem to be the perfect choice. The resulting £150 (approx Rs 6500) Bug, however, is disappointing and looks like something that stepped off a Dr Who set and into the bedroom of a moody teenager. Looks aside, it is a great product, with loads of interesting features. You can pause, rewind and even record live radio onto a memory card. And because of its Secure Digital card slot, it can also play your MP3 files. But the best feature is the alarm system, which lets you set two different alarms (one for you, one for him or her), with more options for choice of station to wake too, volume of alarm and weekend lie-ins. All is pretty straightforward to use, but the one thing that lets it down is the central, four-way control button which is over-sensitive and almost impossible to use.

DNA COMPUTERS

Israeli scientists have devised a computer composed of DNA and enzymes. The enzyme FokI breaks bonds in the DNA double helix, causing the release of enough energy for the system to be self-sufficient. It runs on DNA. As of now, the DNA computer can only perform rudimentary functions, and it has no practical applications. The device can check whether a list of zeros and ones has an even number of ones. The computer cannot count how many ones are in a list, since it has a finite memory and the number of ones might exceed its memory size. It can only answer yes or no to a question. It can't correct a misspelled word. In terms of speed and size, however, DNA computers surpass conventional computers. While scientists say silicon chips cannot be scaled down much further, the DNA molecule found in the nucleus of all cells can hold more information in a cubic centimeter than a trillion music CDs. A spoonful of Shapiro's "computer soup" contains 15,000 trillion computers. And its energy-efficiency is more than a million times that of a PC.

Enter the Tungsten W, a BlackBerry-esque wireless Palm that works on GPRS networks and also offers voice support for making calls. Is this the wireless Palm that we've all been waiting for? Well, sort of. The Tungsten W is an all-around useful communications tool, with strong PDA features and decent e-mail functionality. SONY ERICSSON K800I

Sony Ericsson seems to think about its successor. K800i’s technical performances are truly amazing. A huge 466MB of internal memory, the 3.2 MP camera, QVGA (240x320) LCD screen, Bluetooth 2.0 and EDGE/UMTS support make K800i a true high tech cell phone. The first pictures of the K750i’s successor leaked last week and showed the new device called Wilma. It is clear from these pictures that K800i will support a complete change of user interface. The complete menu (a line with icons) shows the similarities to P990i. This proves that Sony Ericsson will close the disparity between Symbian UI and standard JAVA phone user interface. The size of the new cell phone will be quite the same as the old K750i. Like W810i, K800i uses the same new central key, and the differences between the two phones are the camera (2.0 MP W810i, 3.2 MP K800i), and the lack of front camera and video-telephony from W810i. The device will be available most likely at the end of the year. Real time date and sale price are not yet known. Looks like 2006 will be a good year for Sony Ericsson fans.
