PHILIPS MCD700

The first thing that comes to mind when you see the Philips MCD700 is ‘Nice… really, really nice!’ The complete unit has a clean mirror finish – with very few controls on its face to mar its understated class. The speakers with their Rosewood finish only add to the overall package. To complete the aesthetics, Philips has also thrown in a nice glass-finish stand. The 2x25W RMS/50W system is capable of playing DVD, VCD, MP3 and WMA CDs, CD (RW) and picture CDs.The system also has an AM/FM digital tuner. The device has the ability to play hours of MP3s without skipping or getting stuck – something that older players from Philips suffered from tremendously. Overall, this Dolby Digital, DTS system, at Rs 11,999, is not a bad buy. Its good looks, decent output and convenient size make it an ideal device for any bachelor or spinster pad.

Bose Triport

Great sound that doesn’t skip a beat and a really amazing pair of headphones make the Bose Triport CD Music System an enviable acquisition. And had it not been for a steep price of Rs 17,800 (taxes extra), it would have been perfect. The headphones which come along with the player are truly unbelievable. The sound insulating capabilities are extremely impressive. Just putting them on is enough to cut you off from this noisy world. As for the system, it is a bit on the heavy side and its blocky design makes it look clunky rather than a sleek player. The up-side is that it packs a lot of features like the convenient function that allows you to make your own playlists by just pressing an ‘Add-to-MyMix’ button. Another highly useful inclusion is the ‘Browse’ function which, once activated, allows you to quickly scan across directories and song lists to skip directly to a favourite. Playing is really smooth and the system’s performance is unaffected by any amount of shaking.

iRiver N10

Travelling in public transport with the N10 is feeling like a rock star. Inevitably, at least one person, everyday, will ask you about the device. The common mistakes are mobile phone and FM player. Where as, in reality, the N10 does nothing of the sort. This device from iRiver comes with a standard set of cables, documentation, software and an attachment that lets you use your own headphones instead of the one provided. The 256MB version of the player, which we got, stored just 50 songs. The Device has a cleverly hidden screen and amazing headphones. Even the software provided is easy to use and functional. The price, at Rs 8,499, however, is a bit steep. Then again, you have to consider that the N10 is a James Bond-style spy recorder, hidden listening device and even a fashion accessory.

iBall Rave

The Rave MP3 player seems to have some amazing features such as expandable memory using SD/MMC support, multi-bitrate voice recording, an FM radio and an e-mail function that enables you to “read and receive email anywhere with advanced email software” – at least that’s what it says on the box. Rave is a repackaged Pocki Eyeshot MP3 by Tai-hao enterprises, Taiwan. The player comes packaged with a nice set of headphones, a rechargeable battery, a USB extension cable, a utility CD, and manual. The device has a very “plasticky” feel overall, except in places where it’s covered by rubber. The buttons feel tacky and are really hard to use while navigating. The voice recording facility and the FM radio are a nice addition. The Pocki like the iRiver N10 has a single colour screen and is priced Rs 6,625.
